Fleet Valley National Scenic Area

National Scenic Areas are places which represent the very best of the landscapes for which Scotland is renowned. They are of such outstanding beauty that they should be looked after for future generations to enjoy.

There are currently 40 such areas, the majority located in the mountainous north and west of Scotland. All three National Scenic Areas (NSAs) in this region, the Nith Estuary, the East Stewartry Coast and the Fleet Valley, are working landscapes focused on the river estuaries and bays of the Solway Firth.

The Fleet Valley

Experience the history, wildlife, farmland and fine views in this landscape full of variety and interest.

The land rises gently from the coast, through the narrow wooded valley, to the open heather clad hills - all in a small compact area. The farmed landscape and broadleaf woodland provide a wonderful setting for the historic town of Gatehouse of Fleet, which lies between the valley and the coastal bay.

This special place has been designated a National Scenic Area - one of the finest landscapes in Scotland.

Management Strategy

Dumfries and Galloway, in partnership with Scottish Natural Heritage, has published Management Strategies for its three National Scenic Areas.

The areas - the Nith Estuary, the East Stewartry Coast and the Fleet Valley - were designated over twenty years ago for their outstanding beauty and in order to protect them as part of Scotland’s heritage. There are only forty National Scenic Areas (NSAs) in Scotland, the majority located in the mountainous north west of the country.

Implementation of the Strategies will require the delivery of a wide range of actions involving numerous organisations and individuals. It is vital that those who live and work in the NSA continue to be involved and informed during the implementation process.

Advisory Groups have been established in each of the NSAs to take forward this ongoing process of participation and partnership. They will provide a local focus for activity within the Areas, help steer the implementation of the strategies and guide the work of the Project Officer.

Fleet Valley Management Strategy can be downloaded here as a pdf document.

Garries Wood Report

Solway Heritage was asked by the Gatehouse Development Initiative to carry out an assessment of Garries Wood with a view to making recommendations for improving the site for biodiversity.
The purpose of the assessment is to evaluate the current wildlife value of the Wood to help inform proposals for habitat enhancement and future management.
