Anna Hotchkis was one of the artists who lived in the Greengate close, Kirkcudbright. The Bluegate close in The Five Red Herrings, where Wimsey was living the simple life matches the Greengate close.

Dorothy L Sayers makes a number of references to the Clints of Dromore, which were painted by Chris Fergusson and also Alick Sturrock. Chris Fergusson was one of the founders of the Dumfries and Galloway Fine Art Society.

Mossyard was a favourite painting ground for MacGeorge at the time Dorothy Sayers was visiting Galloway. MacGeorge, who was born in Castle Douglas studied with Hornel in Edinburgh and Antwerp.

Carrick had long been a favourite painting place. Made popular by John Faed many artists came to Carrick and other points along the Borgue shore. It was here that Wimsey found Strachan painting.
