Little Boreland - Book CoverThe Story of a Magical House
by James Collett-White

Little Boreland is the white 18th century house perched picturesquely above the road to Cardoness Castle from Gatehouse of Fleet.

This booklet traces the history of the property from 1780 when the farmhouse, outbuildings and drystone dykes were erected by the Cally Estate, owners till 1931. It tells the story of the various people who have lived there, brought to life by numerous illustrations.

In 1951 Glencairn Balfour Paul saw the house from the road, fell in love with it and bought it. His brother Ian, a keen bird watcher and elder of the Kirk, lived there from 1990. His nieces and nephew now use the house for holiday lets.

The book has been thoroughly researched with the help of estate records. Many people have depicted the house and adjoining wood including early 20th century local artists such as A R Sturrock and A M Hotchkis. The Balfour Pauls have found Little Boreland magical. This 32 page booklet attempts to show why and should appeal to anyone with an interest in local history.
