A small group of people assembled at the Gatehouse of Fleet War Memorial on Saturday 15th August to remember VJ day.
At 10.50 The Legion Standard bearer Charlie Coid marched up to the War memorial to the sound of pipes played by Euan Donald. The Rev Val Ott set the scene and then offered a prayer in remembrance of all those who served in the Far East in WW2. Two minutes silence were then observed. The names of those who were killed in the Far East from Gatehouse were read out followed by the Kohima Epitaph 'When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today’. The Provost, Helen Keating representing the Community Council laid a wreath on the memorial and Josephine McCreath laid flowers in memory of her Grandfather who fought in the Far East with the Chindits.
