Riverbank Park Project

The project was born in 2017 after a year of campaigning for better play parks in the area.

Unfortunately the Council, Loreburn and DGHP did not have any funding for upgrades.

Local residents were encouraged to take the reigns and fundraise for better facilities themselves.

It started out as a removal and replacement of the current climbing frame, until local parents approached us with other concerns regarding DDA compliant equipment, disabled facilities and outdoor exercise equipment and an outdoor sensory garden was suggested.

We realized there was a need to provide an all - inclusive park, so no child is left out.

We aim to provide an all-inclusive park for the whole community right in the heart of a social housing area within the town.

This started out as one mum on a mission, to get better play facilities in the area for her young children at the time, 3 years ago.

Since then other parents also then raised concerns and a small committee of parents came together to tackle the issues of lack of facilities in the town for young people.

We firstly approached the council - Dghp and loreburn and the community council , unfortunately there was an issue with who owned the land and it took over a year to get confirmation after going round in circles -  thanks to the help of local councillors we progressed forward .

However there was then a realisation that there was no available funding for the project to remove and replace the old piece of equipment and we were encouraged and advised to take community leadership of the project to raise money ourselves - hence the,

The Riverbank Project was born.

With the help of the GDI (Gatehouse Development Initiative), the supporting charity, we were able to approach bigger funders like the Robertson trust and the Hollywood trust - we have worked on many funding applications over this last year and a half and we were lucky enough to get some secured funding put in place , as we await news on other funding applications , we continue to fundraise ourselves ,however we still need the last £20,000 to come in by the end of August to get this dream park built or the bigger funders may retract some of the money, if we don’t meet their deadlines . We didn’t realise we would end up campaigning, raising awareness and reaching parliament to have a motion raised to congratulate us on our work so far :

THE PROJECT KEEPS GROWING - A team of volunteers and local groups joined us on our fundraising quest, we have had so much help and support with our own fundraising events from auction of pledges to sponsored bike rides, handmade items sold ,school bake sales , face painting , raffles, tombolas, gala parade donations, fun runs, fire brigade events, from kids fundraising to donations  from some local businesses and much more.

We are on the last leg now and really need your help financially, a small donation, or help to fundraise with our team of volunteers to get our young people of Gatehouse of fleet their wee dream.

Through our own fundraising and funding applications so far we have secured around £67,000 - our total required to build this dream is £86,000 - we are so close.

We are asking for the help from members of the community to join in with us, and ask you to participate with any fundraisers with us or ideas of your own.

All contributions welcome no matter how small.

We are also appealing to any local businesses for their help, whether it’s in donations or alternatively sponsoring a piece of play equipment.

We will advertise any business who can help and a plaque of thanks will be erected on the funded equipment when it is built with your business details.

This is for the young people of Gatehouse of fleet, and will make a huge difference within our small community.
