Forest Chief Visits Gatehouse

Tim Rollinson Director General of the Forestry Commission visited the Cally Woods on Tuesday 22 September to see for himself the work being done by the Gatehouse community in partnership with the Forestry Commission to enhance the woods for visitors and locals alike.

The Director General, who was accompanied by a small group of senior officials, heard how Gatehouse has a long tradition of forestry and how Cally Woods have been part of the Forestry Commission since 1933. Back then the emphasis was on providing employment.  Today the Commission and the local community want to make the most of the Cally Woods as a place of recreation. Mr Rollinson was shown the work done by the Gatehouse Development Initiative to publicise the local area on the Commission's information panels and the visitors learnt of the major project to conserve features of the Designed Landscape of Cally.
