  • Tesco Bags of Help - Fun Outdoors needs your support

    Fun Outdoors is an inspirational after-school group for children of primary school age in Gatehouse of Fleet in which children learn many basic skills like starting fires, campfire cooking, building shelters, whittling, safe tool use, using maps, arts and crafts, whilst playing games and having fun. Many (if not most) of the primary school aged children in Gatehouse have benefited from this group over the last 4 years.

  • Newton Stewart Walking Festival kicks off with walk through Cally Woods

    A beautiful  sunny day greeted  festival walkers as they set off for a walk through a thousand years of history.  With the scent of bluebells strong in the air, the walkers visited the Cally Motte before going onto the Temple and then heading for Cally via the sunken dyke.  The walkers made their way to the Mill on the Fleet by way of the old school, where they were able to enjoy a welcome drink before heading back to Newton Stewart on the bus.

  • Training days mark end of Cally Walls 2015 project

    Thanks to the generous grant of £3790 from the Post Code Community Trust and support from the Forestry Commission, Dumfries and Galloway Council and the Gatehouse Development Initiative, the whole section of wall between Enrick farm and the A75 has now been repaired.  

  • Make it a Galloway Memories weekend

    The weekend of the 13th to the 15th June promises to be a great opportunity for all those interested in local family history.  The Gatehouse Development Initiative and Broughton House, Kirkcudbright are teaming up to promote a weekend of family history events.

     

    On Friday 13th June at 7 30pm there will be a talk in the Faed Gallery in the Mill on the Fleet on the photography of William McMurray
    On Saturday 14th June from 12 noon to 4 30pm there will be a Galloway Family History Fair at Broughton house, Kirkcudbright
    On Saturday 14th June and Sunday 15th June from 2pm to 7pm the photographs of William McMurray will be available for study in the Community Centre, Dromore Road, Gatehouse of Fleet.

    On a recent Sunday afternoon a group of mums, dads, grandparents toddlers and curious locals set off from the clocktower in Gatehouse of Fleet to look for the giant who was rumoured to be roaming the Cally Woods.

  • Excavation on Trusty's Hill

    To mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society, the Society is undertaking an excavation of the Dark Age stronghold at Trusty’s Hill just outside Gatehouse of Fleet, between 19th May and 2nd June this year.

The Clints of Dromore
The Clints are a striking granite escarpment at the top of the valley, best visited from Scottish Natural Heritage's visitor centre at Dromore.  The Big Water of Fleet Viaduct is close by. More.

Carsluith Castle

Beaches


Fantastic Beaches
The tide goes out a long way across the Fleet Bay opening up huge expanses of sandy beach. Sandy bays are to be found at Cardoness, Mossyard, Sandgreen and Carrick.  More.
