  • Make it a Galloway Memories weekend

    The weekend of the 13th to the 15th June promises to be a great opportunity for all those interested in local family history.  The Gatehouse Development Initiative and Broughton House, Kirkcudbright are teaming up to promote a weekend of family history events.

     

    On Friday 13th June at 7 30pm there will be a talk in the Faed Gallery in the Mill on the Fleet on the photography of William McMurray
    On Saturday 14th June from 12 noon to 4 30pm there will be a Galloway Family History Fair at Broughton house, Kirkcudbright
    On Saturday 14th June and Sunday 15th June from 2pm to 7pm the photographs of William McMurray will be available for study in the Community Centre, Dromore Road, Gatehouse of Fleet.

    On a recent Sunday afternoon a group of mums, dads, grandparents toddlers and curious locals set off from the clocktower in Gatehouse of Fleet to look for the giant who was rumoured to be roaming the Cally Woods.

  • Excavation on Trusty's Hill

    To mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society, the Society is undertaking an excavation of the Dark Age stronghold at Trusty’s Hill just outside Gatehouse of Fleet, between 19th May and 2nd June this year.

Clints


The Clints of Dromore
The Clints are a striking granite escarpment at the top of the valley, best visited from Scottish Natural Heritage's visitor centre at Dromore.  The Big Water of Fleet Viaduct is close by. More.  

Cardoness Shore


Cardoness Shore
As the tide goes out the many rocky islets are gradually uncovered around the edge of the shore, excellent for rockpooling. More.  

Cairnholy


Cairnholy
There are two burial sites at Cairnholy dating from Neolithic times, both very well preserved and commanding fine views over Wigtown Bay.  Cairnholy I is notable for the impressive facade, in front of which, archaeological evidence suggests, ceremonies took place.  More.  

The Bakehouse


The Bakehouse
Formerly a bakery, and still featuring the original oven, the Bakehouse in the High Street is an arts venue promoting the literary arts live.  Poetry readings and associated events take place most months.  More.  

Caerlaverock


Caerlaverock Castle
One of Scotland's greatest medieval castles - about an hour away, south of Dumfries.  Can be combined with a visit to Sweetheart Abbey, the New Abbey Cornmill, (both also Historic Scotland), Caerlaverock Bird Reserve, or The National Museum of Costume at New Abbey. Historic Scotland:read more.
