Riverbank Park Project

The project was born in 2017 after a year of campaigning for better play parks in the area.

Unfortunately the Council, Loreburn and DGHP did not have any funding for upgrades.

Local residents were encouraged to take the reigns and fundraise for better facilities themselves.

It started out as a removal and replacement of the current climbing frame, until local parents approached us with other concerns regarding DDA compliant equipment, disabled facilities and outdoor exercise equipment and an outdoor sensory garden was suggested.

Cally Bluebell Run

A new 10km trail run through the blue carpet of Cally Wood starting and finishing in Garries Park, Gatehouse of Fleet the route will cover many of the trails within the wood. The date is 5th May and should fit well for those preparing for the Kirkcudbright half marathon as well as those on a bit of a break over the bank holiday. The event is for all levels, it is a test for those hardy trail runners and a lovely route for those more social and fun runners; there are a few ups and downs, some wet sections and a bit of a water splash as well as a number of historic monuments within the wood. However the main reason for the race is the opportunity to run through the areas of Bluebells; the spectacular annual bloom of these wildflowers is a sight and smell to behold.

Restoration work completed

The scaffolding surrounding the Rutherford monument has been taken down, the security fencing removed  and the last of the pointing at the foot of the monument finished.  The monument is now restored to its former glory.

To celebrate the restoration of the monument there will be a talk in the Mill on the Fleet on 26th October by Professor John Coffey of Leicester University.  In the meantime the Gatehouse Development Initiative will be preparing an information board on Samuel Rutherford and the monument which will be placed in the Mill on the Fleet and we will also be producing a trail leaflet.
