Community Centre

The Building
The building is at the corner of Dromore Road and Garden Street and is adjacent to the Medical Centre and the Primary School.
This building was formerly used as the Gatehouse School. In 1985 it was taken over by the local community. Being an old building, levels of insulation were low, there were some leaks in the roof and over the years it had become “tired”.
But now things are changing.
- 8 very efficient heat pump based heaters / air conditioning units have been installed.
- Solar panels are being fitted to the main roof.
- Planning permission is being sought for sealed unit double glazing virtually throughout the building.
- Ceiling and loft insulation will be installed, together with loft ventilation.
All this is happening at a time when we are recovering from a major water leakage in the toilet block which was caused by frozen pipes during the last winter. As a result ceilings have been taken away and walls stripped of plaster down to bare bricks. When de-humidifiers have done their job of drying out the building, toilets will be reconstructed and the whole toilet block will be painted, as will the main hall.
Any roof works necessary to avoid future leaks will be carried out and the whole exterior of the building will be cleaned and then painted.
All-in-all the Community Centre is being given a complete facelift. Most of the work is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2010, but timescales depend on planning permissions, availability of finance and the ability of local firms to carry out the work when we are ready.
Bookings
We are hoping to finalise an on-line booking system, but this may turn out to be an on-line room availability system, as some management input is likely for most bookings.
The building contains 4 corner rooms, each approximately 27 ft x 19 ft in size. For the foreseeable future 2 of these rooms, the Bunker and the Snooker Room, are likely to be sub-let on a long term basis. Another corner room is currently laid out as a Meeting Room with large tables in the middle of the floor. The last room is known as the Lounge. The Meeting Room and Lounge are currently bookable by the hour, subject to availability, with the charge being £10 per hour.
The main hall has a usable space of 53 ft x 20 ft and is also bookable by the hour at £12 per hour.
